US, July 12, 2007 – What do you call a standalone expansion that offers even more content than the game it’s based on? From our standpoint, you call it “freaking awesome.” That’s exactly the label we have to apply to the upcoming Company of Heroes expansion, Opposing Fronts.
The new game adds two new armies, two new campaigns, and a number of graphical improvements to the already stellar experience of the original game.
Of the two new armies, our favorite is probably the British 2nd. These tough bulldogs are the ultimate defensive fighters, making them a good choice for players who aren’t quite ready for the high-energy advances required of the other armies. You can tell right away that these are British troops
and it’s not only the accents and bagpipe music that gives it away. The uniformsf and unit designs are also very authentic to the British troops and vehicles from the War.
The main expression of the Brit’s defensive character is their ability to rapidly create trenches, MG and mortar emplacements and medic stations wherever they go. Sure, they move a bit more slowly than the other armies, but once they’ve taken an objective it’s going to be damn hard to pry them away from it. The new British ability to button up enemy vehicles by firing on them means that they’ll have less to fear from the larger vehicles in the game as well.
Since they’re not as fast as their enemies, the British have the ability to re-deploy their bases. This power allows them to keep their command trucks close to whatever objective they happen to need at the moment, giving them a great deal of freedom to determine exactly which objectives they want to go after. The Brit’s enemies will have to hit an enemy who isn’t rooted to their infrastructure.
But just because the British as a bit slower doesn’t mean they can’t make a rush when the time comes. The British officers can add to the speed and rate of fire of their squads, for one thing. They can also call in commandos who fly in on gliders. Heavy gliders can even be used to deliver the game’s only airborne tank, the British Tetrarch.
